Week 2 Hot Topic

Week 2

Should students play (software) games in school?

In my opinion, students should engage in play during school. Creating effective learning environments require the use of computers in the classroom. Games utilized in the classroom should be education based and focus on the deficit skills of the learners as reinforcements. Having a firm foundation in the pre-school setting, I have noticed the growth of student engagement and motor skills increase with the use of gaming in the classroom.

In Montgomery County, all pre-school programs use software. My students are given 30 minutes a day to engage in recreation at the computer center. I have chosen software that is age appropriate as well as interactive. The type of software I use the most is Starfall. Starfall allows my students to engage in learning with the use of hands on learning while in corporative learning groups.

I believe using educational games in the classroom will help students develop a love for learning. For example, some students become discouraged while learning colors and seasons aloud during class.  Education based games help students to build confidence while practicing current skills. Games in school allow students to build friendly competitions that promote effective communication skills.

In summary, it is in my belief that students should engage in software games that are based on the educational standards as aligned in the curriculum.  These games will help students to achieve higher academic achievement and promote fine motor skills. Games can be both educational and fun for students, especially those in the pre-school setting.
